Foam Bench
Textured concrete meets polished aluminum
Date
November 4, 2025
Fractall, a Belgian studio, designed Foam Bench using two contrasting materials: white pigmented concrete and extruded aluminum tubes. The concrete base carries a textured surface created through direct contact with styrofoam plate molds during casting. This process transfers the styrofoam's cellular pattern onto the hardened concrete, leaving a rough, tactile finish.
The seating surface consists of aluminum tubes, extruded and machined to a smooth finish. The polished metal sits on the textured concrete supports, creating a material contrast between industrial precision and cast roughness. Color pigments mixed into the white concrete offer customization options for the base elements.
Foam Bench demonstrates how manufacturing processes can become visible design features. The styrofoam mold leaves its mark on the final piece, turning a temporary forming material into permanent surface texture.
